I can't explain how incredibly DAMP it is here in Shanghai. In September, it was so hot and humid, I would be drenched with sweat by the time I reached my school at 7:30 a.m That humidity is year-round- there is no "let-up"- even when it gets cold. I have purchased wool socks. wool turtlenecks and wool sweaters to layer on, and most days I am still cold to the bone.
There is NO central heating in China- except in the 5-star hotels. Some of my students are wealthy enough, that they have had central heating installed. But, mostly, each room is heated with a single inadequate electric blower- that don't even oscillate and are attached tot he ceiling
My room in the Dorm is still reasonably warm, but the school- where I spend 8 hours most days- has NO central heating- and many classrooms have no heating at all. The ladies toilet is not heated either.
The rain in the last two days has made the situation more dismal. Teachers and students wear coats all day long. The school is an open concept Agora- stacked classrooms around and open courtyard. I have to bring my digital camera to show you.
The worst part is that the staff feel they must keep the windows open- I go around the school all day long, closing windows……….
This woman must live in Shanghai………except we have no snow- just rain!
