Monday December 9: My Senior 2's could not wait to tell meths morning at 9:45 a.m.this morning ( after having tight two previous classes of much l
younger students - oblivious?) that one of our Junior 2 students is pregnant. She is 14 years old - I do not teach her- do not know her- but what an uproar at the school today!
I had "prepped" something totally different of this calls, but this was such an interesting opportunity to "share" cross-cultural differences between Canada and China.
My Senior 2's are 17 and 18-years old and equivalent to my college classes back home. While i LOVE all the levels that I teach here, these classes afford me an opportunity to have "hard-core" discussions on some very interesting topics.
What I heard: Her "accomplice" is also 14 years old and a student at this school. Her pregnancy will be terminated, for sure. Her life is ruined - as is his- but to a lesser extent. Both sets of parents will be responsible for 80% of the "blame". They have "lost face".
My question was much more pragmatic and I did not ask it, but: WHEN and WHERE do 14-year-olds have sex???? ( In Shanghai, I mean!). There is no privacy anywhere and the students are "booked" solid every moment of the day……
When I got back to my office, I saw my office-mates for the first time that morning. We had the whole discussion again- they were eager to hear what the "typical" Canadian response would be and how I felt about it…………( these are (Chinese) MEN and they were so "gossipy" - I LOVED it).
what a fun day………………..( I DO feel bad for the girl involved- these students get absolutely NO Sex Education in the curriculum- and they told me "quality" condoms are very expensive- the cheap ones don't work)
On another note- Victoria ( Russian teacher & neighbour) entertained friends from SuZhou on Sunday. They shopped and she saw this notebook and thought of me. She is truly a generous and lovely friend here in Shanghai

beautiful note book!! now notebook here is digital and plugs into a usb port....this one looks like it fits into a cargo size port aka portfolio...love your blog......sorry about the student and the family losing face....i think it is a shame that there is such public bias, and that it wasn't kept quiet for the sake of the student so she could continue her studies without all this commotion.....so hugs from canada for this young student.......
